Carces is the perfect location for those seeking to experience genuine Provencal village life but lies within easy reach of all parts of the region.

Situated between Cotignac and the Thoronet Abbey, Carces (pronounced car-says’) has a population of 2, 476 inhabitants.

Carces is a medieval village set upon a low hill, with narrow streets, vaulted passages, medieval portails and ancient houses and doorways.

Local shops are only a 5 minute walk away, including a minimarket, bakers, pharmacists etc and there is a supermarket and petrol station on the edge of town (10 min walk). There is also a bank with an ATM and a local doctor.

There are a few bars and restaurants in Carces serving basic but very good Provencal food. There is even a takeaway pizza shop and a Chinese restaurant!

The local market is held on Saturday morning in the centre of the village which has a good variety of stalls, including, clothes, baskets, cooked foods, Provencal and local specialities, olive-wood items, fruits, vegetables, ect.

There is a local wine cooperative and a vineyard selling wine from Domaine St. Eloi.

There are excellent hikes from Carces, with loop hikes of various lengths in different directions though the thickly forested countryside.

To the east, the “PR de la Vallée de l’Argens” follows along the river, with an “out” section about 8 km, or a loop return from about the half-way point.

To the south and southeast, loop hikes take you along the western edge of the Lac de Carces. Another loop to the southwest goes to the St Vincent Chapel on the ridge top (395 m), around 4-5 km away.

Fishing

Nearby to the village is the lake of Carces, a lovely spot of 100 ha.
It is a paradise for fishermen with its 8km. of banks.

Events

A couple of nights a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays) for most of July and August, Carces has jazz music at the médiathèque (the library courtyard).
